While we’re all tightening our financial belts and keeping an eye on every penny, we still want to be able to take that well-earned break away in the summer. For a while, the ‘staycation’ became popular, but thanks to the availability of cheap flights and some great deals on villas in the holiday islands of the Canaries, we’re packing our passports and heading off abroad again this year. So what makes Gran Canaria such a great destination for cheap holidays?
Gran Canaria is part of a group of islands in the Atlantic approximately 90 miles off the northwestern coast of Africa. A fascinating island of contrasts, Gran Canaria has been called a "Miniature Continent", thanks to the different climates and landscapes that make this island unique.
From long golden beaches and endless dunes of white sand, to deep ravines and picturesque villages, Gran Canaria draws in over two million visitors every year. Most tourists head for the south of the island and the major coastal resorts, while those looking for a bit of peace and quiet can discover some stunning villas to rent in regions such as Maspalomas. This part of the south of the island is only a short drive from the crowded beaches and busy resorts, but it could be a world away in terms of tranquillity and naturally stunning landscapes.
If you’re looking for cheap holidays for the whole family this year, you can’t do much better than Gran Canaria. The island is geared towards the tourist trade, so facilities and accommodation is of a very high standard across the island. If you shop around for cheap flights, you can get to Gran Canaria for under £100. Combine that with a great deal on a villa and perhaps a little flexibility as to when you travel, and you can construct a holiday package that packs plenty of sunshine at a bargain price.
To cut the costs even further, going self-catering in a villa gives you greater flexibility and control over your time and your budget. With villas well supplied with all the cooking facilities you’ll need, there’s no reason for you to be tied to hotel schedules on holiday.
If you’re a sun worshipper then the best times to visit are between April and September, although the island’s climate is pleasantly warm all year round. That increases your chances of getting a great deal on a cheap holiday, as out of the peak season you’ll find plenty of bargains but still have all the benefits of a warm, temperate climate. If you love water sports then the water temperature is warmest during August and September.
Gran Canaria has a reputation for being an island of contrasts, so if you’ve had enough of lazing on the beach there’s plenty to see and do. Plan carefully and your cheap holidays to Gran Canaria could actually work out to be more cost-effective than that ‘staycation’ you had last year. And you get a better tan!
